The first week of September kicked off a new season of competition in the eNASCAR College iRacing Series, with hundreds of college students from more than 200 schools across North America vying for scholarship prizes and national recognition in the virtual racing world.

After a week of Time Attack qualifying, the top 120 drivers earned a spot to compete for one of 39 positions in the Semi-Finals of the Queen City Crown event, hosted at the virtual Charlotte Motor Speedway. Seven members of the University of Northwestern Ohio’s eSports Club qualified among that elite group, with each racer battling to reach the main event.

When the checkered flag waved, two UNOH drivers — Isaac Shelley and Tyler Skoczen — powered their way into the top 25, earning their spot in the finals. UNOH was the only university to have two drivers qualify for the final race, a remarkable accomplishment in one of the most competitive fields in collegiate iRacing.

Broadcast live on the official iRacing YouTube channel and eNASCAR Live, Shelley and Skoczen represented UNOH proudly on a global stage, finishing 15th and 16th, respectively, after 50 intense laps of door-to-door racing. Each earned valuable series points that will accumulate throughout the six-event season, where $7,000 in scholarship money is awarded in each tournament and a $10,000 grand prize goes to the season champion.

For Shelley, competing at this level is both a challenge and a reward:

“It’s awesome to compete at this level and do well against some of the best iRacers in the world,” said Shelley. “It’s something that I put a lot of time and effort into, so it’s nice to see the rewards. UNOH being the only school to get two cars into the main event is something to be really proud of.”

Looking ahead, Shelley has set his sights on consistency throughout the season.

“My goal for every race this year is just to make the final round and the top 25. Now that we have a race under our belt and understand how the new format works, I’m going into Daytona with a lot clearer mind.”

Skoczen, who enrolled at UNOH as a last minute decision before finding his place on the eSports team, echoed that sense of pride and gratitude:

“It’s an absolute pleasure to be part of this league,” said Skoczen. “I’ve wanted to be a race car driver for so long, but this opportunity through UNOH has been amazing. Just getting my name out there has been super cool, and I can’t thank my friends, family, and everyone at the school enough for their support.”

He’s also looking to keep the momentum going.

“Continuing to advance to the top 25 show is important not only for me but for our university,” he said. “It was incredible to get two UNOH trucks in the main event at Charlotte, and I hope we get more for Daytona. The speed is there — we just need to execute.”

This month, UNOH’s eSports Club turned its focus to qualifying for the next event — the Clash on the Beach at Daytona International Speedway. After another round of time attack qualifiers, eight UNOH drivers earned a spot in the Daytona semi-finals, the most of any college competing in the series.
